Scorecard

Boreham & Roxwell Cricket Club 2nd XI v Writtle III on Sat 06 May 2017 at 13:00
Boreham & Roxwell Cricket Club Won by 74 Runs.

Match report On a track that was described as terrible by our grounds man, our captain Trevor Money walked out to it with the Writtle III team captain to do the toss which he promptly lost and was put into bat. Things started well enough for Boreham as Neil Collins and Trevor opening the batting until Neil was caught at midwicket with a miss timed shot for 1. (19-1).

This bought outdoor debutant Stuart Hills into the fray who only delt in boundaries and clattered his way to a maiden 50 for the club that included 10 fours, he succumbed though to swinging at the straightest one and getting bowled on 52. Stuart and Trevor put on a good 70 runs for the 2nd wicket partnership. (89-2)

Next up batting four was Paul Morris. Paul was stroking the ball around the park nicely and himself and Trevor were happily scoring the runs needed from the bad balls, all was to end though as just after drinks break when Boreham were on 113-3 by the way Trevor attempted to hit the youngster Dryden but fluffed it and was bowled on 43. Paul was only on 31 at this stage with no sign of what was to come. (148-3)

Next up batting at his highest spot for the 2nd team for a number of years our trusty grounds man Ken Greenaway. Now Ken spent weeks doing our square so he should have known about the bounce or in his case the lack of it as he was out done by Dryden again with a double bouncer that then hit about 2 inches up his middle stump. At least Ken was smiling as he trudged off the field having scored 1. (159-4)

Last seasons 2nd team captain now this years vice captain came in batting at 6. And made a good start to what was to become a club record partnership for the 2nd team with Paul Morris. Paul got to his 50 not long after Kevin arrived in 40 balls, not his first 50 but undoubtedly this would become something special.

Kevin acting as a brilliant back up to Paul held his end up magnificently as Paul sprayed the ball around the park, credit has to go to Writtle III’s though who plugged away though. Paul took another 20 balls to get to his maiden century as he hit 3 sixes and 2 fours consecutively in an over which took Boreham into rare territory of a 250 plus score. Paul was not finished though and as the final ball was bowled which was a bye Paul finished on 122 not out with Kevin having batted for nearly an hour ending on 13 not out.

Boreham scored 280-4 with the 4th wicket partnership of 121 breaking the record of 120 held by Andy Bryant and Trevor on the 12th June 2010 vs. Galleywood II.

Teas for the first match of the season were supplied by Kevin Ling. They were pretty much bog standard with out a subway pot in sight.

Opening the bowling for the 2nd team was the before mentioned head grounds man Ken and the not mentioned yet Alex Cook which is unusual. It was the latter who made the breakthrough bowling S. Pavitt for 6 in the 4th over. (19-1)

This bought James Taylor to the crease, this lad all 6ft 5inches of him reminded me of a young Liam Watts as he bashed 3 consecutive fours of Kens 3rd over. Cookie then managed to get awarded a some what according to the batsman dubious LBW to him as J. Sheldon was given out by the umpire on 5. This happened all in a 6 over space. (32-2)

James was in pull flow now and was ably supported by Paul Beard. Now those of you who follow Essex I guess or England… I don’t know… will recognise the name Beard as Aaron Bead is his nephew. Both Alex and Ken finished there allotted overs with figures of 9-0-43-0 & 9-0-40-2 respectively.

Drinks came and went with Beard and Taylor looking good at the crease with the score on 102-2 of 20 overs. Then came what we call the “drinks affect” at Boreham. Micky Rayner and Lee Skinner or Skins were now bowling and Micky gained his first wicket of the season bowling Taylor for an impressive 57. This now helped Boreham back into their stride as the Writtle kids started to worry on the sidelines. (135-3)

T. Barker was next in batting at 5 for Writtle III’s and soon after Skins made the breakthrough by bowling Beard for 60 thus getting the other danger man out. Writtle were still looking good but from my point of view sitting scoring I new the end was nigh going by the comments from the Writtle youngsters around me. (158-4)

Micky then gained another 3 wickets in three crushing overs for the visitors as he clean bowled T. Barker (11), S. Barker (9) and Willsher (0) and reduced them from 158-4 to 183-7. Midway through Micky’s 3 overs of pain for Writtle the 1st team boys arrived back from there own victorious match over local rivals Wickham and offered there support in there very own unique way.

Skins had been a big part of slowing the rate down too from the other end and both Micky and Lee finished their spells with figures off 9-0-36-4 & 9-0-49-1 respectively. With 36 overs gone and Writtle on 192-7 at this stage the captain bought Owen Cooper and himself on to bowl the last 4 overs. Owen who hadn’t bowled since last year made a wobbly start with a mixture of wides, runs and dots whilst Trevor started with a wicket clean bowling Purches for 0. (200-8)

Trevor got the sniff of full bowling points at this stage and it was in the next over when Owen made this a little more realistic by bowling Dryden for 10 for his first wicket of the season. This opened the way for Trevor to clean the Writtle innings up with Owen catching close in at slip the unlucky Woodham on 9.

Writtle finished on 206-10 but it was a brilliant match for both teams with 486 runs scored on a track that our grounds man had described as terrible before the match started. Credit to the young Writtle team though as they showed a true spirit of the game.

Man of the match for Boreham had to be Paul for his 122 not out. So in our first match of the season we gain 26 points and it also lands us top of division Ten. Next week we are away to Oaklands and we come up against a former player by the name of Kettley, lets show em what we are about.
