Wickham v Boreham & Roxwell Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 06 May 2017 at 13:00
Boreham & Roxwell Cricket Club Won by 35 Runs.
Match report
The 1st XI opened their season away at Wickham at probably one of the coldest grounds in the T-Rippon. New skipper Wordley promptly lost the toss and we were inserted in to bat.
Wordley and M.Lockett opened up and like a poor mans Langer and Hayden, punished the bowling and after 2 overs Boreham were 17-0. Disaster struck though as within 2 overs both openers were back in the hutch and cursing the premature end to their innings just as they were looking set to book in for bed and breakfast.
This brought Kempster and M. Hills to the crease, the latter who looked good in scoring 1, but then nicked off to leave Boreham wobbling. Kempster and Stanton then thankfully steadied the ship adding some much needed runs to add some respectability to the score on a pitch that provided the odd surprise, coupled with some probing bowling. Kempster soon departed for a well crafted 27 (which would prove invaluable in the final total) and a short while later Stanton was somewhat controversially adjudged to be out stumped just as he was looking set for a big score. This led calls for future club money to be directed towards a third umpire camera instead of Zing Bails. Boreham were wobbling again…
Thanks to the efforts of Heal (31) with arguably the shot of the day through the covers like a young Ian Bell, and some watchful punishment dished out by C.Lockett (25) to the bowling presented to him, Boreham recovered well to post a challenging 153. A total that gave the bowlers something to bowl at...and one we would have taken after 10 overs.
After the interval and with some inspired words from the pre match huddle, Boreham set to the task in hand.
C.Lockett and Wordley opened up and kept things tight, with the former getting some nice seam off the pitch into the batsman. But wickets were so far elusive and it would take an inspired piece of fielding to kickstart the collapse and reinvigorate Boreham. Step forward Dave “they all call me Jonty Rhodes” Stanton who pouched a superb catch – catching the ball inches off the turf initially, but somehow managing to parry it and catch it above his chest as he fell to the ground. Wickham 1 down and Boreham on their way.
If we thought that was good, ‘Jonty’ then proceeded to gives us all a masterclass in fielding once again. This time with an even better effort that had Boreham, Wickham and the surrounding houses and spectators (1 man in high vis and his dog) all giving a standing ovation in appreciation. This time the batsman mistimed a drive that looped into the offside… the ball looked like it was going to run away for a couple missing the fielder, but then out of nowhere a diving Stanton plucked the ball one handed out of thin air just cm’s from the turf. A sensational catch, the best seen in years for Boreham and cue pandemonium from the Boreham players. Tremendous stuff!
This was the catalyst for wickets to tumble at a rate of knots. Wordley picked up his third wicket and C.Lockett, a late arrival to the party soon picked up 2 more of his own, both caught by that game changer Jonty Stanton again. Wickham 5 down for not many and Boreham in complete control.
There was no respite to follow. A canny bowling change (definitely not jug avoidance) soon saw M.Hills pick up his first league wicket for Boreham, and O’Halloran soon picked up 2 wickets of his own too – his pace and late inswing far too good for numbers 9 and 10.
Wickham were not done yet though and with the dangerous no.7 still not out, ably supported by the number 11, slowly they inched closer to the target. Reducing the total to less than 50, then less than 40…. Surely Boreham couldn’t grasp defeat from the jaws of victory?
Fear not as just when it was beginning to get too close for comfort, Jafr sneaked one through the no. 11s defences to win the game and secure victory.
A superb game of cricket all in all and kudos to both teams for an enjoyable afternoon. The trend of “thriller” games of Boreham vs Wickham continues…
