Match report
Skippers log: This is a historic moment.
It was a very cold and quite dark evening at the Wells Pavilion in Purleigh. I lost the toss and was asked to bowl first.
Opening the bowling was Kai Creswell who bowled a very tight spell with the odd loose ball that went for four, Kai was the only bowler to bowl his full four overs. Second bowler was Stacey Taylor who bowled two very good overs, again with a few loose balls that went to the boundary. Purleigh’s opening bat M. Oliver managed to get to twenty-five which meant he had to retire which brought a new bat to the crease. In the twenty-five he hit a six that hit my car and Staceys on the rebound but luckily there was no damage
Bowlers three and four were Harry Willis and myself. Harry was bowling his usual tight line which eventually got him a wicket when he bowled E. Oliver for six runs. I bowled two overs which also resulted in not many runs conceded and a wicket of M. John when he chipped a ball up in the air for Kai Creswell to catch. This wicket brought J. Patel to the crease, who was another batsman for Purleigh that reached twenty-five runs and meant he had to retire. After ten overs we switched ends, which was when I decided to bring in spinners and slower bowlers, my wicket takers. Firstly I went to Stu Careless for an over but forgot to ask him to warm up which in hindsight was a mistake on my part as he was hit for 13 runs in the only over he bowled (sorry stu).
Next up bowling was Ikram Naim and Bharat Morarji both bowling some excellent spin bowling. IIram picking up the wicket of S. Rynn for LBW thirteen runs. Bharat bowled a very tidy spell even if he was a bit short at times only going for 21 runs is nothing to be ashamed of, we then ran out M. Rynn after a mixup in the middle. To finish off our bowling innings I went to George O'halloran and Matt Wilkes. Geo bowled with a slight hamstring niggle bowled two superb overs including the wicket of J. Taylor the Purleigh captain and Matt had a very good over to help keep the score under 110.
Purleigh stumbled to 107-5 from their 20 overs.
We opened our batting innings with Ben and Ikram. Both batsman were in a destructive mood retiring quickly. Ben hitting one over for twenty-two runs alone making twenty-eight in the process with a huge 6 towards the club house and brutal shot down the ground for four. Ikram was just a good as Ben hitting the ball to all parts for a well made twenty-six. In at three was Joe Paisley who was bowled for one by M. John as was number four bat George, I was run out for one by George after he called through for two and I wasn’t quick enough.
At the halfway stage we were 60 odd for 3, at the crease was Matt and Stu who stuck together well hitting the ball around to keep the score moving along at just a quick enough rate to keep the game interesting. Matt was eventually caught by S. Rynn off the bowling of the Purleigh skipper for a crucial thirteen. This left Stu and Kai to make the runs we needed for our first victory in a very long time. Both batsmen were cautious with the light going away and the outfield slowing up.
The score kept ticking along until we needed eight runs from six balls. Stu hit a lovely four off the second ball of the over and then a quick single which meant we needed only needed 3 to win with 3 balls remaining. Kai was on strike managed to miss the first two from the three remaining balls, so it come down to the very last ball. Kai on strike hit the ball through extra cover which was a very good shot for two but a slight misfield ment that Kai and Stu could run the third which was enough to win and end a long losing streak which dated back to early 2019.
As captain I would like to add I am very proud of this team and the way we stood up and wasn’t going to be denied a win, we had some very crucial spells with the ball and some great batting, Let’s keep up this momentum going Boreham and Roxwell T20 team.
