Match report SO VERY CLOSE!

COMFIRMED CLUB RECORD BROKEN AT WEEKEND

Even though we lost by a mere ywo runs on Saturday there was some silver lining to the defeat with two of the least likely candidates for a club record with the bat to appear.

With the score on 101-9, there was not much hope once Stuart Careless had gone into bat with Kai Creswell and early showers were more likely, but how we proved the doubters wrong.

Rayleigh set a total of 156-6, with Kai Creswell picking up 3-29 and Arlo James Parker looking like a demon behind the stumps taking two catches, the game was set to be another nailbiter.

Boreham didnt start well as one of the opening pair was trapped LBW for 0 with the score on 6, Dominic John Kempster trundled into bat and made 33 to push the score onto 54 before he was caught playing his favourite shot.

Then the collapse, from 54-2 to 68-7, the seventh wicket being captain Ken Greenaway being given out LBW by a shooter on 26 in a matter of 8 overs. Micky Rayner and Kai Creswell stuck around to move the score onto 96-8 (Micky being out stumped, as he had to come down the track to hit the ball). Ellis Oxlade was up next, he got his first runs for the club before Kai Creswell ran him out with a suicidal call.

So the scene was set.. 101-9, Stuart Careless and Kai Creswell in bat... who would have believed a chance of a victory was in sight... ID SAY NO ONE AND IM WRITING THIS REPORT LOL!

Our game plan was simple, tip and run!, get to 125 if we could for a batting point, the Rayleigh mood changed from thinking they had won it to a nervous feel in the air as the runs flowed slowly.

125 came with 5 overs to spare.. the away skipper told his troops "31 runs in 5 overs, this pair.. no chance". 150 then came up, two batting points, I was near keeling over at this point, last over with 7 to win, first ball 4 byes... goood! But then diaster...

With 5 balls remaining I tipped the ball and ran as the plan
was worked but by fractions of an inch Kai was ajudged to be run out and the keepers end, all I heard were cheers and so it wasnt to be by a mear 2 runs falling down on 154-10.

Stuart and Kai in the process set a new club record last wicket stand of 53, beating the one set in 2011 by Jim Wicks and Stuart Careless (again) of 51.

A classic game for the ages, we always seem to get them at Boreham.

If only the three batsman who all got ducks got at least one each it would be us cheering..
