Boreham & Roxwell Cricket Club 2nd XI v Rayleigh VI on Sat 10 Jun 2017 at 13:00
Boreham & Roxwell Cricket Club Won by 123 Runs.
Match report
Having won the last 5 matches the twos went into the Rayleigh match knowing that a victory would keep up the pressure on St Johns Billericay at the top of the league. The toss was made by Trevor Money which was promptly won too and TM elected to bat first siting that we need to catch up in the bonus batting points in the league table.
Trevor and Ken Greenaway opened the batting in a partnership with 110 years between them. Make no mistake the experienced pair made no mistake in what was to become the highest partnership of the season so far. Trevor made it to 50 as Ken was backing up superbly then as TM closed in on his century his partner played a silly shot and was caught on 46 but the partnership basically ended the match for Rayleigh as we were 160-1 from 27 overs.
Batting 3 was Paul Morris looking to barrage the Rayleigh attack with hard hitting shots, he had one hard hitting shot but was then bowled by Gibson on 7. Trevor was creeping towards a century still stuck on 94. (187-2). Number 4 was Michael Rayner, after his 65 not out last week he strolled out to the crease then 3 balls later he strolled back again on 2 (190-3)
Kevin Ling was then in. Our version of Captain Slow but a good batsman don’t get me wrong. He supported TM in making his century but then it was the centurions turn to get out playing a silly shot much like what Ken did straight to a fielder thus being caught on 101. (208-4)
The wickets then fell quickly, first was Jacob Morgan making his first appearance in the league this season with a 2 ball duck , then Owen Mosse hit 7 before being bowled and lastly Arlo Parker who still has not perfected his defensive attacking variant shot getting bowled on 0. (216-7). Kevin was still plugging along on 13 and Alex Cook made a rare appearance at the crease with an unbeaten 2. Boreham posted 222-7 but in a innings where 300+ was on the cards losing 6 wickets for 56 runs was never going to help our cause. J. Jones was the pick of the Rayleigh bowlers picking up 5-47.
Tea this week was done my myself and was said to be a very good spread with lots of nibbly bits.
As we took to the field there was a confident feel in the air that 222 was just enough to see of Rayleigh, only this was we didn’t bank on taking nearly 40 overs to do it. Opening the bowling was Alex and Ken as usual and between them they reduced Rayleigh down to 29-4 with tight accurate bowling. Both finished there spells with figures of 9-3-13-3 & 9-2-15-1 respectively.
Trevor and Micky then came on and like Alex and Ken they put on a clinic with getting 5 wickets between them thus reducing Rayleigh down to 90-9 from 36 overs. Amongst the 9 or so wickets there were also 4 catches, two for Owen Mosse and one each for Paul & Jacob.
The last 4 overs were due to be bowled by Jacob and yours truly but lucky enough Jakes only needed an over to claim the final and much deserved wicket to bowl Rayleigh out for 99.
It was only our 2nd full points victory of the season but it did keep the pressure up on St Johns Billericay at the top reducing the deficit down to 6 points. Roll on next week were we are away to Galleywood III’s.
