Match report This week was match four of our 2017 season and the second eleven made the trip to Purleigh Cricket Club to play South Woodham Ferrers III’s. Captain Trevor won the toss and elected to field. Before the match started it was announced that we have a minutes silence to remember the victims of the Manchester Bombing.

The match started with our second eleven being a man down with Alex Cook having to work. Ken Greenaway and Micky Rayner opened the bowling and it was not long until SWF’s lost their first wicket with S. Curbs being caught behind by Owen Mosse on zero. (0-1)

Just 5 runs later Ken struck again with an LBW appeal when J. McGarry was adjudged to be out by the umpire. Now before the match Mr McGarry asked me if a curtain Mr Watts was playing… thankfully for him he was not as he remembered the game where Mr Watts smashed him for nearly 100 runs off 10 overs. (5-2)

South Woodham Ferrers were now rocked and when Alex finally turned up Ken had already taken his third wicket of the match by bowling J. Dave for 3 to leave the home team reeling. (20-3)

J. Permanand was next in but soon out for 1 with Michael Rayner picking up his only wicket of the match with SWF being on 23-4. Ken and Michael closed their stints with figures of 9-1-29-3 and 9-3-10-1 respectively.

Boreham were now thinking about bowling bonus points but were not expecting SWF’s to be so stubborn. A. Chapman and T. Jorge were building a steady partnership, along the way in their 46 run partnership A. Chapman smashed a ball towards yours truly who managed to field the ball with his mouth… stopped a four though! The partnership was soon ended though by Alex Cook when he bowled A. Chapman for 32. (69-5)

Alex soon struck again with two quick fire wickets, a straight forward catch by myself and Stuart Hills grabbing one too reduced South Woodham Ferrers to 99-7. Then the wickets dried up with T. Jorge and S. Mears battling on to an unbroken partnership of 31 to close the home teams innings on 130-7 from 40 overs. Alex and the silent captain closed their stints with figures of 9-2-20-3 and 9-1-30-0. This week we also had the addition of Kai and Stuart having a few overs each at the end with identical figures of 2-0-15-0,

So Boreham were set a total of 131 to win could they do it and win four from four……. Opening the batting was the new pairing of Kevin Ling and Mike Bruder. The opening pairing was broken in the 7th over with Kevin being given out plumb LBW for 1. Just 3 runs later it was Mike Bruder’s turn to get out caught by A. Chapman on 6. Boreham were on 15-2 from just 11 overs.

Well with Stuart Hills and Trevor Money now in bat there was only going to be one outcome, a great Boreham victory with a scintillating 3rd wicket partnership of 116 to see us home. Stuart ended on 75 not out with TM in a supporting roll with an unbeaten 25 to record an 8 wicket victory to make it 4 from 4.

Next week Boreham host third placed Bentley IV’s in a must win match… can they do it?? Watch this space.
