Boreham & Roxwell Cricket Club 2nd XI v Hornchurch Athletic IV on Sat 20 May 2017 at 13:00
Boreham & Roxwell Cricket Club Won by 89 Runs.
Match report
Well its now week 3 Dave and the match reports for the 2nd XI are still being produced, but I would like TM to maybe do one soon LOL. In our third match Boreham 2nd XI welcomed to the recreation ground Hornchurch Athletic IV team. The captains wandered out to the freshly prepared wicket and Trevor keeping up from the 1st week lost the toss and was inserted into bat on a wicket that could have had many descriptions.
Opening the batting was the old faithful Trevor Money and the defensive master Kevin Ling. A positive first 3 balls were bowled but then the forth claimed the wicket of Trevor who was caught for his 2nd duck in a row, now this is a rare event but I have researched it and the last time this happened was back in 2003. So good start…. (2-1)
Next up was Stuart Hills. Now like Trevor he is an old hand at this game and took no time to establish his shot hitting abilities with a near straight drive for four…. But then was to become unstuck 4 balls later being bowled by M. Willis. (10-2)
Liam Watts came in at 4 and made his first appearance in the 2nd team since 2012. He started by picking the bad balls with two 4’s and a single in his first 11 balls but then being outdone by what Liam called a very good ball from S. Kumar whilst on 9. (20-3)
By this stage we were 3 down and only 8 overs into our innings, things were not looking very rosey for us as William Reed was quickly swept aside with a golden duck bowled first ball by S. Kumar again and things looked abit bleak but there was hope on the horizon. (20-4)
And in hope I mean Ken Greenaway batting at 6 and the head grounds man of the club. Now Kevin had been quietly moving along and at the fall of the 4th wicket he was on 2 from 8 balls. Ken and Kevin set about producing a great partnership between them to move the 2’s along. It was slow going but the soon built up a healthy and I feel match winning partnership of 84 to bring up the 100 and also our first batting point. All good things come to an end though and just after a rain break Ken ran out of luck and was stung LBW by the young N. Duke on 33 in the 30th over. (104-5)
In next was Michael Rayner, a good left hander like most before asserted his boundary hitting abilities with his favourite shot but not for the first time today was caught with only one scoring shot. Alex Cook came in and then went out after just one ball trying to strip the leather of the ball by hitting it into the clouds and completely missed it then and got bowled. (111-6)
Owen Mosse then entered the fray and was batting with the forgotten man so to speak in Kevin, we were now 31 overs in and Owen started to open up right from the get go with a lusty blow for 4 towards the swings. Kevin though was not so lucky and after a good innings that consisted of holding an end up for 155 minutes and 112 balls he was caught of M. Willis for 31. (119-8)
I was now hastily padding up and I had a new apprentice scorer in one Mr Watts senior. I was soon to be in as Owen got bowled by S. Kumar for a good 15 (138-9). Trevor then instructed us that we had to bat out the overs and worry about the extra batting point when it comes to it, luckily just before the last wicket fell of myself we got a couple of singles to bring up the 140. Unfortunately I was hit straight on my ankle and thankfully Stuart Hills raised his finger as I was ravaged by pain so there it was apart from Kevin and Ken in the middle a very scrappy 140 all out.
Teas this week were done by Owen and Lucy and those ham and piccalilli sarnies were very nice.
Opening the bowling were Ken Greenaway and Alex Cook, we new defending 140 would be tricky but we were in for a dominating 28 overs of bowling by out old guard that heralded 9 maidens in total. I will whiz through Ken’s bowling performance as he had a big mention earlier…. 9-2-13-0... While Alex’s was more action packed as he claimed 3 wickets and decimated Hornchurch with some exquisite balls. The opposition were rattled and at 15-3 from 18 overs the 2’s were in a commanding position. Next up were Michael Rayner and Trevor Money who gave away just 22 runs between them and gained 6 wickets. At drinks Hornchurch were 29-5 and to be honest it was very hard going. Another 8 overs came and went and the wickets tumbled. So hope was gained with 12 coming off Michaels 4th over but it was all over soon after with Michael bowling the last man and Hornchurch only scoring 51 all out. Michael’s final figures were 5.3-0-20-4 and Trevor’s was 5-3-2-2 respectively.
Ken Greenaway was awarded captains player of the match and we also picked up 24 points as well to keep us 2nd in division Ten. A great team effort, next Saturday we travel away to Purleigh to play South Woodham Ferrers III’s.
