Match report
B’s lose to Fairview
Boreham IIs endured a long afternoon on the hottest day of the year as a brave performance by just nine players resulted in a loss to Rayleigh Fairview. With Jonathan Riches unable to find the ground the team spent the first 8 overs with 8 players and then with Steve Deal taking a ball directly to his kneecap also spent the last 8 overs with 8 players, so to keep their hosts to 323 on a fast track in stifling heat was somewhat of a positive! Holidays, late withdrawals and injuries meant it was a tough weekend for the club.
Bowling first, Ryan Davies and Rob Hepworth started brightly taking the wickets of Hines and Webster quickly but in the tiring heat, Rayleigh’s top order however then all got into gear with four players making fifties. Wickets were taken, including two by Stu Careless and a second wicket of the season for Riches but it was a very long afternoon! Carl Chatters suffering from a severe case of the hunger rage took two catches, and Steve Deal with multiple injuries also took a very fine catch.
Chasing the big total, Hepworth and Lockhart-Hawkins made a great start, scoring 24 off the first two overs but against a very good opening bowler in Nichols Hepworth fell for 16 and L-H for 8 in swift succession. Careless wagged the tail with 14 but after fielding for 4.5 hours there was little energy in the batting performance all out for 59. Though it was a defeat the Boreham attitude in the field was first class and there was no giving in with players working until the end. Careless’ two wickets were a bonus and he certainly enjoyed being back in the twos.
With returning players Boreham should be able to field a full line up in the coming weeks and will get better rewards than this week.
