Springfield IV v Boreham & Roxwell Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 22 Jun 2013 at 13:30
Boreham & Roxwell Cricket Club Lost by 76 Runs.
Match report
After a wash out last week everyone was looking forward to getting back into the swing of things, with Ongar failing to get a team out the First team picked up a much needed 26 points to lift them of the bottom of Division 4. After some quick team changes the seconds arrived at Springfield with a slightly strengthen team hoping that this would be the win they have been waiting for.
The day started off well when Hepworth won the toss and put Springfield into bat, with Rayner and the younger Davies opening the bowling Springfield were struggling to put runs on the board. Some stunning fielding from the older Davies and Mosse behind the stumps meant a wicket was sure to follow, and so it did when Rayner moved one and with the batsman missing Mosse didn’t hesitate in whipping of the bails for his 4th stumping of the season. With Watts replacing Davies, drinks were delivered with the game in the balance.
A change of bowling after the break brought on Singh and Kettley and with the run rate low the batsman had to hit out, which they unfortunately did for a while. With the score climbing quickly a wicket was needed, it almost happened when Singh was lofted in the air to Watts but with the wind swirling all around him was unable to hold on to the dropping ball. The breakthrough finally came though when a change of angle from Singh fooled the batsman who played it straight to Hepworth at covers.
Throughout the season the younger Davies has been a sensation with the ball but although he has been hard to hit he has not picked up the wickets that he has deserved. That was about to change today, coming back on for his second spell he picked up 3 wickets. The first was a ball that took out the off stump after the batsman who had looked set on 45 played all around it, next was Mosse first catch of the season after a slight nick from the bat. Davies then followed this with a stunning caught and bowled leaving him with figures of 3-47, this would have been even better if Mosse and Chatters had each held onto hard chances from the youngster but it was still enough for the MVP.
Hepworth had come on at the other end to finish picking up 2 wickets both catches, one taken by a confident Kettley in the deep and the other on the 3rd attempt by himself, again this could have been more but Kettley who did well to get hands on it couldn’t hold a catch in close. With the Springfield innings ending on 210-7 it was a frustrating afternoon on the field for Boreham but with a strong batting line up a target that was in reach.
Kettley (12) and Bruder (27) started off well seeing out the first few over's on an erratic pitch which produced a different bounce every ball. Kettley was out playing to a wide delivery which hung in the air for the fielder to snap up, Watts (0) was in next but couldn’t control his shot which again came on to the bat high with the close field waiting, with the older Davies (0) also going for a rare duck, being bowled by a ball that kept low Boreham were struggling. Boreham rebuilt with a 92 run partnership between Bruder and Hepworth (71). Hepworth who has been building some confidence with the bat lately finally hitting his 50 in the league and going on to hit his highest ever score for the club consisting of 12 boundaries.
Things were looking up for the batting team with Bruder starting to play his shots but this didn’t last when Bruder was eventually out for 27, swinging at a straight one and watching Brocks finger go up after the ball hit his pad plumb in front of middle stump. Rayner (1) soon followed caught behind playing at a wide ball which brought Mosse (5no) out to the middle, coming in after a run of ducks in the firsts he was soon of the mark with a single which brought the biggest cheer of the day.
Hepworth was next out mistiming a drive which flew to point with the fielder taking a smart catch, a batting collapse followed with 4 wickets falling for only 6 runs. Chatters (2) was first to fall playing a stunning drive only to see a fielder pull of an equally stunning catch, ‘One Shot’ Martin (0) followed but unfortunately his one shot saw him trudging of for a duck and when Indergot (0) departed as quickly, it was looking bleak. The younger Davies (1) looked settled but a change in bowling brought the final blow with another dodgy bounce giving the fielders another easy catch leaving Mosse at the other end stranded on 5.
Although the result leaves the 2s still searching for that elusive batting point and even more elusive win lessons were learned and experience gained and with Hepworth in the runs and the Younger Davies in the wickets the team heads into the halfway point of the season with hope.
Next week we are playing Rainham II's at home, teams for both the 1st's and 2nd's will be confirmed by at least Thursday this week.
