Navestock & Ardleigh Green II v Boreham & Roxwell Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 08 Jun 2013 at 13:30
Boreham & Roxwell Cricket Club Lost by 166 Runs.

Match report The game following the night before, with some of the team a little worse for wear Boreham II's completed the trek to Navestock with all the players arriving on time (so it was going better than last year already), even though Carl Chatters and Jamie Baines went to the wrong village in search of Gary Deal who needed picking up.

Having lost the last 3 tosses it was about time the 2's had some luck and they got just that when Hepworth correctly called Heads and announced Boreham would have a bowl. What followed was a mix of frustration, elation and profound head scratching.

Boreham II's were missing 2 key players this week in Davies the elder and Sammy Brock, both of whom were on the Isle of Wight in Shanklin moonlighting for someone else.

So it was the younger Davies who opened with Rob Hepworth and showed the aging skipper how it is done by keeping things tight whilst the skipper got smashed all over the park going for 30 of just 3 overs. Prompt Head scratching and a worry of the Marconi nightmare was dawning again!!

A change of bowling failed to work with Jamie Baines again getting treatment with the opening batsmen in full swing now. With Love-Heart making his debut behind the stumps doing his best impression of Matty Prior, Hepworth looked to debutant Inderjot Singh to make a break through. It did not look good when Singh asked for the leg side to be packed, especially when it was the shortest boundary and the batsman had found it on several occasions but it worked.

With their number 2 completing his 50 the ball before Singh produced a ball that hit pad, bat and eventually finding middle stump to make the breakthrough. With Chris Empson replacing Ryan Davies and then taking a wicket the next over Boreham II's went into the drinks break with the score at 180-2.

With renewed enthusiasm from Chris Empson and Inderjot Singh continued to keep things tight, with 3 more stunning overs from Davies thrown in and some great fielding across the team the wicket was coming. Having again changed bowlers at both ends with Gary Deal tossing it up and the youngster Jack Lindsell (bowling for the very first time) launching the ball at stumps but more often the batsman’s head the pressure was on Navestock to score.

The breakthrough almost came in a Deal over with a beautifully flighted ball finding Baines in the field but he was unable to hold on, but in his next over Deal knocked over middle stump with batsman departing for 86.

Another bowling change brought more reward for Boreham, Hepworth having been taken apart in his first 3 overs came on with a spell of spin (we all know what happened last time he bowled this... 82 runs from 5 overs) but with a bit of help from the field it worked. Hepworth found some movement knocking over middle stump in his first over. With Davies back on at the other end keeping it tight Navestock had to hit out, which played into Boreham's hands.

In Hepworth’s next over the most bizarre wicket of the season occurred, the batsman came down the track only to edge the ball on to Love-Hearts forehead with the ball eventually landing in Tony Martins hands at slip, best assist of the season so far!!

The remaining overs went well for Boreham with Hepworth claiming another wicket thanks to the catching of Singh and with another ball clipping leg stump produced his best ever bowling figures of 4-55. Navestock eventually finishing on 301-7 which may have been better if Deal and Davies had held on to hard chances at the death but Boreham were able to walk off the pitch with heads held high.

Then came the batting…..

Hepworth (31) and Love-Heart (4) opened with normal gusto, Hepworth playing his game and lashing out with Love-Heart building his innings. This didn’t last as long as hoped when he was bowled by a peach of a ball the swung both ways and took out his middle stump.

Ryan Davies (1) coming in at 3 stayed for a bit before a near identical ball departed him. Hepworth was giving a lifeline when he was bowled but the umpire signalling a no-ball but he could not take full advantage of this when he was run out of a direct hit from the boundary for 31.

Martin (10) was playing his one shot to full effect but departed on 10 being stumped when taking on the bowler.

Chatters (8) who had made a career best score and partnership with Baines (0) the week before started with confidence but Baines was unable to repeat the event swinging out for a duck and Empson (0) soon followed playing all over a low ball.

Chatters was the next victim, managing to play a ball onto the stumps with the help of his testicles (much to the amusement of players from both teams). Deal (12) came in swinging but after hitting the boundary in 3 successive balls could not stay around either.

Jon Riches (2) got far too excited after clearing the fielder he decided to do it again but missed. With the score now on 82-9 it was looking to be another low one but the Navestock attack were about to meet the tail end duo of Jack Lindsell and Inderjot Singh for the last stand.

Debutant Singh (18) and youngster Lindsell (30*) were smashing both the ball and the previous 10th wicket record to bits with a swashbuckling partnership of 54! Alas it was not enough for the second’s first batting point and when Singh departed the Boreham innings ended on 136 but with renewed optimism and the exciting debuts and additions to the team it is only a matter of time before the Seconds get their first win.

MVP: Jack Lindsell.
