Willow Herbs II v Boreham & Roxwell Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 01 Jun 2013 at 13:30
Boreham & Roxwell Cricket Club Lost by 7 Wickets.

Match report Boreham Seconds gave their best batting performance of the season as they lost away at Willow Herbs. After Rob Hepworth’s wife Georgie gave birth in the early hours of Saturday morning (to Elizabeth Sarah-Jane), stand in captain David Lockhart-Hawkins took on the job of leading the Boreham collective, and his first act was to lose the toss and be put into bat.

The pressure of leadership a heavy burden, clearly causing all kinds of difficulties L-H was subsequently the first wicket down in the third over, but with father and son pair Graham and Ryan Davies digging in fantastically the Willow Herbs opening bowlers were seen off with the B’s racing to a majestic 20 odd from 20 overs.

The Davies partnership finally ended with, Davies senior out caught out for a seasons best 17, bringing in debutant Steve Healey who took great advantage of a tiring bowling attack to hit a fantastic knock of 56, including 10 fours, ably supported by Davies the younger and Sammy Brock who held up an end while Healey dished out boundaries.

With the seconds far exceeding their best batting total of the season the introduction of an unlikely pair in Jamie Baines and Carl Chatters saw a remarkable end to the innings, with both scoring personal bests. Chatters clearly benefited from using Lockhart-Hawkins’ underused bat with three fours in an excellent 24, displaying patience and improving technique. Baines however finished not out with his personal best of 27 featuring 4 boundaries, again showing patience and waiting for the bad ball. The twos posting their season best total of 147 for 8 from the full 45 overs.

In the field some early missed opportunities cost the team dearly, though Davies the younger was again excellent with the ball with a wicket and fantastic economy in two spells (10-2-21-1). Gary Deal, making his first appearance of the season for the twos after injury showed the benefit of winter nets with some tremendous spin in an excellent spell, taking one wicket for just 6 runs in his first 6 overs (finishing 8-2-24-1). Sammy Brock, also with spin took his first league wicket of the season (5-0-1-25). Chris Empson and Baines both struggled to keep the ball in the on side and paid the penalty but will learn from the experience as Herbs were able to chase down the total in the 36th over.

All in all it was an encouraging performance and the return of Hepworth should see the team get closer to that first win of the year.
