Match report Woodham Mortimer tied with Boreham

On a quiet, warm and sunny evening at Pheasant Park, Boreham arrived at the ground with an expectation of recording their first victory over the local rivals at the 4th attempt of the season in the T20 ashes.

On mutual consent between the skippers, Mark Beames and Peter Kettley, Boreham elected to bat first and their opening pair was Pete Kettley and David Lockhart-Hawkins. Peter didn't stick around too long as he was caught behind by Josh Brady of the bowling of Tom Payne in the 5th over. Boreham 13-1 of 4.1 over's.

With Pete's demise this bought in Tom Moss who made a good start and managed to retire on 30 even though he broke a bat in the process. Dave was slowly plodding along and was on 16 when Tom retired to bring in Jamie Greenwood who carried on where Tom left of as he then raced to 29 in just 20 balls.

With Jamie retiring there was still excitement as Liam Watts came into the game and made brisk work of knocking some runs around the park. Unfortunately in the 19th over David lost his wicket and was bowled by Ollie Glasson on 26. Toms’ Jamie’s and David’s partnership was of 77 for the 2nd wicket. Boreham 90-2 of 18.1 over's.

Liam eventually finished on an unbeaten 9 and Boreham finished on 108-2, a good showing between the batsman and a good display too from the umpires too with an umpiring debut of Carl Chatters too.

I should have mentioned this before but Boreham had their 2nd female player ever in Hannah Verlander playing for them as they were short on numbers. Hannah opened the bowling to her brother George. A battle of the siblings ensued. Opening with Hannah was Jamie Greenwood who made no mistake of getting the wicket of Chris Roper for a 2 ball duck. Chris on the previous Saturday had hit the winning runs for Woodham twos with an unbeaten 57 not out, he come along way since playing cricket with Liam, Stuie and Tanner down the Chase Park in Boreham. Woodies 3-1.

George was plodding away and his new partner was Kev Wright. Kev the retired on 30 to bring in the Woodies resident overseas player Mark Beames into the game. Mark didn't stick around too long when he was caught with a very good catch from Hannah Verlander of Peter Kettley on 4. Woodies 65-2.

Three deliveries later in the same over Peter got George Verlander caught by Carl Chatters who took a simple catch at mid wicket. Pete's figures at this stage were 2-15. Woodies 66-3. The wickets started to tumble now at steady intervals with the Woodies going from 66-3 to 94-9 quickly. Pete picked up a further two wickets, one being bowled and the other was another Chatters catch thus ending his spell on 4-22. Tom Moss at this stage was in the mix as well and he picked up 3 quick fire wickets too, two of those were bowled and one caught by Liam Watts in the deep. Tom ended his 3 over spell on 6-3.

The Woodies now needed just 16 runs of 8 balls to secure the victory but there was more tense excitement to come. following a calamitous piece of wicket keeping somehow Richard Kneller managed to totally miss the stumps for a dead cert run out by millimetres with Kev Wright three quarters of the way to Maldon and he managed to get back.

The Woodies now only needed 13 of the final over and Steve Winward was the Boreham bowler with the pressure on him the first ball was a good struck shot by Kev towards the pavilion where Dave Lockhart-Hawkins was positioned, he managed to miss the ball and it went for a four. Woodies needed 9 to win of 5 balls. The next ball was 2 byes then a dot. The score was now 100-9 with 3 balls remaining.

Ollie then made it his own personal target to get the Woodies to their victory, a swiftly dispatched 4 down towards the woods to bring the score to 104-9 with 5 needed for the victory. The Boreham fielders were now all on the boundary as they new Ollie was a very good batsman. On the penultimate ball Ollie dispatched the ball down to Tom Moss who thru it in with ease to Steve.

A very tense last ball stand of happened. The Woodies needed 3 to win and Ollie launched the ball down to Jamie Greenwood who made no mistake in fielding the ball and launched it back in. Ollie only completed 2 runs thus ending the match as a tied game.

On a fitting note this game was by far the best of the series, with Woodham and Boreham playing the game in the spirit that is rarely seen in T20 cricket, if only we had more games like this with all the camaraderie and joking between all 22 players and the scoring ladies too.

A thank you to Richard Kneller who played in 3 of the matches for us as well as Chloe Brady and lastly Hannah Verlander who played for us as too. Hopefully this mixing of the two teams can carry on for years to come.

MVP: David Lockhart-Hawkins
