Boreham & Roxwell Cricket Club T20 XI v Woodham Mortimer on Tue 11 Jun 2013 at 18:00
Boreham & Roxwell Cricket Club Lost by 8 Wickets.

Match report Our second meeting from four midweek matches saw Woodham Mortimer go 2-0 up in the series. Boreham were using a few new players in this game to try and out score and out think their opponents. With Beames running late Boreham batted first with Woodham fielding there first over with 2 subs on as Beamer had Ollie Glasson with him too.

Opening the Boreham attack were first of the debutant’s Jack Copeman and Rob Hepworth, these two made a comfortable start notching up 30 on the board when the first wicket fell. Jack Copeman miss judged a straight ball for George Verlander to reap the rewards of Jacks middle stump being taken out. Boreham 30-1 of 4.4.

It only took 8 more balls for the next wicket to fall. New man in Liam Watts did not stick about very long when he was caught behind by Josh Brady of Cameron Hayman. Liam only faced 3 balls and was out for zero. The track played apart in Liam’s demise but Rob was still there trundling along on 16. Boreham 37-2 of 5.5.

With the two opening bowlers now having finished there spells, Boreham were on a healthy 47-2 of 8. George Verlander finished on 1-10 of 4 and Cameron Hayman ended on 1-30 of 4. This bought on Woodhams new attack of Keith “peggy” Mitchell and Mark Johnson (bowling spin?, I was made aware that this was not normal).

Boreham’s second debutant Clive Smith was now in with there evergreen Rob Hepworth. Between the two they put on a healthy 19 runs for the 3rd wicket but Clive was then out to Keith bowled middle stump on 4, Boreham 56-3 of 10.4.

In the 11th over Rob was set to retire, he made an impressive 31 of 26 balls in 41 minutes. He was the first retiree from the Boreham team only problem was he was the only retiree for them. Boreham 66-3 of 11.5.

With the score on 70-3 it also heralded the end of Keith and Marks bowling partnership. Keith finished on 1-7 of 3 and Mark on 0-16 of 2. This bought in the young attack of Dan Karkocki and Alex Brady.

Peter Kettley and Tom Moss were now at the crease, both were looking steady to increase Boreham’s score but with 77 on the board Tom decided to stand half way down the track and launch of Alex Brady’s bowling straight down George Verlander’s throat and was caught on 7. As the pair had crossed peter faced the next ball and swiftly despatched it for a four only to do exactly what Tom did two balls earlier to exactly the same fielding in exactly the same area of the pitch and he also was caught on 14. Boreham now rocking were on a not so great looking 81-5. Alex’s first over figs were 2-4.

With Tom and Peter leaving the action this bought on the ex Woodham player Tony Martin and Jamie Greenwood as well. Tony being used to seeing tall these players from his former club started with a flurry scoring 5 runs of his first ball (courtesy of a run and 4 overthrows). Jamie was happily holding an end up while Tony was hitting the ball about.

Things were soon to end between the two as Jamie (5) was stumped by a grateful Josh Brady as he ran down the wicket to try and hit Dan Karkocki out of the park. Tony and Jamie had pushed the score on as they scored 24 between them. Boreham 105-6.

Dan’s bowling partner was not done yet as he was to get his 3rd victim only 4 balls after Dan had Jamie stumped. This time it was Tony on 17 who bit the dust as he was clean bowled by Alex much to his mothers delight. Boreham 105-7 of 19 and needing a few lusty blows from the tail end.

Dan finished on 1-21 of 3 and Alex finished by far the best of the Woodham attack on 3-14 of his 3. Mark Johnson was to return for the 20th and last over and he was to get in on the wicket taking too getting Sammy Brock stumped on 0. Boreham 106-8. Only 3 more runs were scored all by Ken Greenaway with Chris Empson (1) in support but the lust blows needed to push the score on never happened and Boreham finished on 109-8. With Rob retiring earlier in the innings there was hope that he could go back in and hit a few but it was not to be. Mark’s final figs were 1-20 of 3.

Opening the bowling for Team Boreham were Ken Greenaway and Liam Watts.

Woodham made a rather slow start in the run chase as they needed 110 to win. With only 12 on the board in their first 3 over’s the gods were looking down on Team Boreham and bringing us some luck. It was not to last as Liam’s tight bowling was then ripped open by Ollie Glasson. Woodhams score moved swiftly from 12 of 3 to 24 of 4.

Ken ended with 0-5 of 2 and Liam ended with 0-14 of 2. Chris Empson and Tom Moss were the next two up with the latter making a breakthrough by bowling Ollie Glasson on 17. Woodham Mortimer 37-1 of 5.3.

Tom finished his spell on a credible 1-7 of 3 with Chris ending on 0-17 of 2. The next two into the Boreham attack were Sammy Brock and Jamie Greenwood. Mark Beames how ever had other idea’s! After a slow start by him he soon found his rhythm by batting Sammy everywhere and eventually retiring on 32 after hitting a huge 6 towards Plantation Road. Connor Hayman was next in for Woodham and he picked up where Beames left of this time he took a liking to Jamie’s bowling. Woodham were rocketing along now.

Jamie finished his spell on 0-17 while Sammy endured worse with 0-22. With Woodham now needing 28 to win of the remaining 8 over’s the Boreham skipper bought on Tony Martin to replace Sammy and he then didn’t disappoint by getting Manoj Tripathi out who incidentally had been in from the start.

Manoj had been looking steady and was looking for retirement, he had a few scares along the way and a few amusing Boreham miss fields helped too. The funniest was a catch that Rob Hepworth wasn’t going to get near and he fell flat on his face much to Chloe and mother Brady’s amusement.

Tony’s ball caught Manoj’s stumps as he missed it, he had been in for 13 over’s and faced 44 balls for his 26 runs. Woodham 90-2 of 13 over’s.

Connor Hayman (14*) and Josh Brady (12*) then steered the Woodies home with 4.3 over’s to spare on a score of 113-2.

This game even though Boreham lost was played in high spirits and it was a laugh between the two teams, we even had an appearance from the one Andy Smith too lend his support and puff away on his pretend cigarette as well.

The next instalment of the Boreham vs. Woodham series will be on the 27th June away at Pheasant Park, this will be the 3rd round of 4. Going on this match Boreham will need to up there game with the bat but what ever happens its going to be a cracker.
