Boreham & Roxwell Cricket Club Lost by 222 Runs.

Match report Boreham Seconds lose to Rankins
An understrength Boreham seconds suffered a defeat at home to Rankins III on Saturday but it will be one of those games that lives in legend after Jon Riches’ breakout performance with the bat and ball!

A 222 run defeat was a tough result after a long day in the field that started with just seven players, increased to nine and finished with ten (after persuading Tanner Bailey to give up an afternoon on the Recreation Ground park bench). Rankins batting first posted an imperious 319, though Chris Empson took two wickets including a fine caught and bowled (5-0-38-2). Ryan Davies, as always bowling well took just the one but had two good LBW shouts turned down (12-3-41-1) with Jamie Baines scalping a wicket with vice skipper Lockhart-Hawkins taking a catch. But it was Jon “Joff” Riches who stole the sunlight in an afternoon of Ibiza-esque heat. Bailey also bowled very well, and was unlucky on his first Saturday appearance of the season not to take more wickets (9-0-46-1).

In 19 previous appearances for the Bees (thank Carl Chatters for that new team nickname), Riches had underwhelmed with just 7 runs with the bat, however after hitting 13 on Saturday including three boundaries he will have the firsts quaking in their boots. But it was his miraculous spell with the ball taking a wicket for twelve runs in two epic overs that will live in the memory. A fantastic shout from stand-in skipper Graham Davies to give Joff the ball resulted in Riches’ maiden wicket for the Bees. Boreham were good in the field but suffered from some big hitting finding the gaps early on.

Chasing the big total, Steve Healey and Bailey got Boreham off to a great start with 33 and 22 respectively and reach 50 for just one wicket down (Lockhart-Hawkins back to form), but after such a lovely tea prepared by Mrs G Hepworth, the rest of the Boreham batting (Riches excused) failed to get out of second gear with Nolde and Bird for Rankins each taking four wickets as the Bees were all out for 91.

Next week brings more hope of a first win, but we’re all still enjoying ourselves and at least we got a tan.
